Manchester United Football Club have always had a reputation for signing young players and nurturing their talents by handing them first-team opportunities.
That mantra will never change at Old Trafford. Heck, why should it as it has brought United so much success?
Amongst those mega-talented youngsters on the books at United right now is Tahith Chong. The fluffy-haired Dutchman had a great pre-season and has been in and out of the first-team fold all term. Unfortunately, he has disappointed more often than not – which is especially cause for concern given his expiring contract.
As you’d imagine, others are smelling blood. According to the usually reliable Fabrizio Romano, the 20-year-old United starlet is being targeted for free transfer, by none other than Inter Milan (again…)
Furthermore, his agent is meeting with the club today as they presumably look to discuss terms – which is well within Chong’s right, whose into his final six-months of his Reds contract, meaning he’s free to talk to overseas clubs about possibly signing a pre-contract.
As alluded to earlier, Chong has hardly set the world alight, though United would obviously prefer to keep him around. In an ideal world, he’d sign a new deal here then spend next season out on loan.
However, it seems to me as if Chong feels like he’s ready to make his impression sooner rather than later. If he feels a switch to Inter is best at this stage of his career then so be it.
United shouldn’t bend over backwards for him, though – as tempting as it may be…
