A couple of seasons ago, Jesse Lingard was displaying the incredible form that we all knew he was capable of. Jose Mourinho was getting the best out of the Warrington-born-winger, though unfortunately, those performances were short-lived.
The last twelve-to-eighteen months have undoubtedly been a real struggle for Lingard, who has drifted in and out of the starting line-up.
After linking up with superagent Mino Raiola, questions started to be asked by the fans. Was his time up?
Well, according to Goal, that could well be the case. Apparently, the 27-year-old is set to be sold by United this summer, after losing the confidence from manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Lingard has been made a back-up option following the arrival of Bruno Fernandes, with the Englishman now only considered for ‘less important matches’ such as the FA Cup clash against Derby County last week…
The attacker has a contract until 2021, meaning there’s just over a year left on his deal, while progress on new terms isn’t happening. The writing certainly seems on the wall.
Furthermore, United are planning in at least one of Jadon Sancho, Jack Grealish or James Maddison this summer, meaning Lingard would only fall further down the pecking order if he stays.
The time does feel right to move away from Lingard. We’ll always appreciate his efforts, but I think the fans have already made up their mind on this one and unfortunately, it looks like there is absolutely no coming back from that.
