Manchester United have started 2020 with a poor defeat. Arsenal more than deserved all three points on New Years Day, though the Red Devils definitely could have played far better.
Midfield is suddenly becoming a real problem position. Paul Pogba is out injured and he now needs surgery, while Scott McTominay could be sidelined for the best part of two months. To make matter worse, a Nemanja Matic January exit now looks possible…
The 31-year-old United man has hinted at the possibility of a winter departure, stating that ‘we’ll see’ what’s going to happen in January. Don’t forget that the Serb has just six months left on his current deal, meaning this could be United’s final opportunity to get some sort of a transfer fee back for Matic.
‘I don’t know what to say. I have a contract for another six months, we’ll see in January what’s going to happen.’ Matic is quoted as saying by The Metro.
‘Will I extend the contract or try to find something else?’
‘United have some option to extend my contract, but we will see if the plans of the club match my plans. I couldn’t say anything more because I don’t really know either.’
At this stage, I’m not sure what the play is, though it’s definitely feasible that Matic does leave over the next few weeks. Personally, though, I wouldn’t be letting him go anywhere unless the club are ready to make one or two signings this month.
Right now, United’s only midfield options are Matic, Fred and Andreas Pereira. January is usually a pretty busy month in terms of games and it’d be criminal to thin that down further – particularly when Pereira and Fred have hardly set the world alight.
Again, it comes back to the overall running of the club. It’s definitely not going well at this point in time. It feels as though we’re taking one step forward then two backwards, often leaving Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with one hand tied behind his back.
