Choosing a Manchester United Team of the Decade seems to be the in-thing at the moment. I guess we’re coming to the end of a mixed ten years for the Red Devils, so picking this XI is probably more straightforward than it could have been had the Old Trafford club enjoyed success season-in-season-out.
Well, thanks to Robbie Savage for the idea, though his team was a general Premier League one as opposed to a United-exclusive side.
Since Sir Alex Ferguson decided to call time on his managerial career, United haven’t been anywhere near as consistent. That said, we’ve still had some success stories to enjoy.
Anyway, let’s get right into Old Trafford Faithful’s Manchester United Team of the Decade…
So first and foremost, the David de Gea selection is an easy one to kick things off with. The superstar Spaniard has been amongst the best shot-stoppers in the business since signing for the Red Devils at the start of the decade. This one was a no-brainer.
Next up we have the best back two I’ve seen in my lifetime. Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic complement each other perfectly. It was always the ideal combination of calmness and aggression and I’d be surprised if we ever see a pairing like it again.
Left-back was another given. Patrice Evra, the man who loves this game, will go down as a United and Premier League icon. Let’s face it, he had little competition, in fact, the choice was him or Ashley Young.
Over on the right, we’ve gone with Antonio Valencia. The Ecuador international had been a fantastic servant to United and he’ll always be remembered fondly. Again, it was him or Rafael. Maybe if Aaron Wan-Bissaka had gotten here a couple of years earlier we’d be having a different conversation.
Paul Scholes is the greatest player I’ve ever seen. What else is there to say about the Ginger Prince? Alongside Michael Carrick, this is a duo who’d dominate both English and European shores in their prime.
Ryan Giggs is United’s all-time appearance leader and he’s won more titles than anyone. Another easy pick. Right-wing was tough. I could have actually gone for Marcus Rashford here but for my money, Nani gets the nod due to his sheer brilliance on any given matchday.
The front two delivered title #20. Robin van Persie was Fergie’s last hurrah and the Dutchman enjoyed the best single-season I’ve seen over the last ten years. As for Wayne Rooney, well, he left the club as United’s all-time top scorer. Need I say more?
