Manchester United will spend money during the summer transfer window, that feels pretty obvious. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been astute in the transfer market so he definitely deserves the opportunity to spend more.
Amongst the primary positions that need strengthening is another new attacker, preferably a winger. A name that is often linked is that of Kai Havertz.
We’ve been offered another update in that saga, and it came from the Evening Standard on Sunday. Apparently, the £60k-a-week star (So FIFA) is in ‘constant communication’ with his current club Bayer Leverkusen amid increasing speculation of interest from the likes of United and Liverpool.
The Evening Standard actually adds that Havertz is on United’s summer shortlist, alongside names like James Maddison and Jack Grealish…
Havertz’s talent speaks for itself. The German has already become the youngest player to reach both 50 and 100 appearances in the Bundesliga, while links to a ‘bigger club’ were somewhat inevitable.
It’s his versatility that’s most interesting to me. This young man can play in several different positions at an extremely high level. He also fits the young player mould that Solskjaer has shown a preference to.
The only question mark comes surrounding transfer fee. Havertz wouldn’t be cheap, while I don’t doubt that Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund will be keen on making a deal happen, too… Beating out them big players in Germany may prove to be tough.
