The Serbian midfielder joined the Red Devils for £40m over the summer and has had an immediate impact.
United fans voted him man of the match in their opening-day 4-0 demolition of West Ham.
He picked up two titles in three years at Chelsea and Pardew thinks he flew under the radar a little.
But that won’t happen at Old Trafford because all eyes are on United players at all times.
“The spotlight on a player at United is always greater”
Pardew told Sky Sports: “I’m not sure he’s the missing piece but I think if you speak to any Chelsea fan, they’ll tell you this guy has been doing this for Chelsea for ages.
“He was perhaps underrated to some degree but he won’t be underrated now, the spotlight on a player at United is always greater.
“The media interest is always that much more.
“I think he’s good enough to cope with it and you have Michael Carrick sitting in the background who I had at West Ham, fabulous player.
“That is a lovely back-up too, so if Matic is injured at anytime or wants to rest him, he’s got the luxury of putting Carrick there.
“So he has a really nice situation in that position.”
