Ander Herrera believes Manchester United are favourites for the Premier League title. The Spanish midfielder is pleased with the shape of the United squad, with Romelu Lukaku, Nemanja Matic and Victor Lindelöf all joining the club this Summer.
The Spain international who turned 28 on Monday says, “If you’re looking for a favourite for the title, then I would back United.” Herrera, the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year for 2016/17 is clearly in confident mood as Manchester United start their 2017/18 Premier League campaign.
Herrera is predicting a close title race this season and he’s, therefore, hoping United can establish themselves well early on. The Reds got their Premier League season off to a great start on Sunday, beating West Ham 4-0.
“The race will be very open and the key for me is to avoid defeats at home and to start the season with a run of victories to prove we are contenders.”
Although Manchester United only lost one home game in the Premier League last season, to Manchester City, they were involved in ten draws at Old Trafford. These disappointing results included draws with Stoke City, Burnley, Hull City, Bournemouth and Swansea City. Herrera is now looking for the Reds to find consistency at home, aiming for an unbeaten start to the season. Crucially, having drawn against West Ham in the last two Premier League seasons at Old Trafford, Sunday’s win over the Irons showed that United may prove to be more ruthless against teams in the bottom half of the league this year.
“Just looking at statistics and at the squad, you can say that Manchester United is a candidate for the title – but we need to demonstrate it on the pitch.”
In their opening match of the Premier League season, Manchester United demonstrated a perfect home performance, with Romelu Lukaku scoring a brace on his Premier League debut for the Reds. While Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba also scored late on to make it a convincing first weekend win at Old Trafford. Ander Herrera was left on the bench after starting the UEFA Super Cup loss against Real Madrid last week.
The former Athletic Club man thinks that this season’s title race will be keenly contested by many teams. The clear omission from Herrera’s list is Arsenal, who finished fifth last season, a place ahead of Manchester United. He said, “I don’t see many changes in the title race – Chelsea, City, Spurs, Liverpool and us.”
The Spaniard did, however, acknowledge that Arsenal will also improve this season, following the big money signing of striker Alexandre Lacazette from Lyon.
“Arsenal will need a reaction after missing out on the Champions League last season and Alexandre Lacazette is a good signing, so let’s see.”
Herrera also said that Manchester United’s main goal for the 2017/18 campaign is to win the Premier League. While also seeking success in the domestic cups, the FA Cup and League Cup. Adding that European success in the Champions League would be a bonus.
“As for United, we want to win a trophy and go as far as we can in the Champions League – but the Premier League is our target.”
Ander Herrera and the rest of the Manchester United squad will now travel to South Wales next weekend to face Swansea City, hoping to build on the good start the Reds made to the Premier League season on Sunday.
