Brendan Rodgers offers fresh Harry Maguire transfer update after confirming Man Utd bids

Rodgers confirmed that The Foxes had received two bids for the England centre half but were nowhere near the club’s valuation.

Now, he says, he’s prepared to wait and see if Manchester United or Manchester City stump up the cash, declaring: “We don’t have to sell Harry.

“Harry has been absolutely brilliant about this right from the word go. He’s a top, top player and a top guy.

“I think it’s important the supporters know that. I’ve been in this situation before with players and it’s not always easy but Harry has been absolutely superb.

“We’ve had a chat about it, obviously.

“He’s happy and I tip my hat to him for the way he’s dealt with all this because it can be unsettling.”

Rodgers added: “I’m relaxed about it all. We understand the situation from all points of view because United and City are big clubs, but unless they meet our valuation he won’t be sold and it’s as simple as that.”

Maguire played the entire second half of Leicester’s 1-0 friendly win at Scunthorpe despite missing training the previous day with a stomach bug. A 35th minute goal from £30m new boy Ayoze Perez separated the two sides.

Rodgers added: “It was Harry’s call – he wanted to play, even though he hadn’t been very well. That says it all really, he’s a total professional. It was totally his decision.”

Maguire received a warm welcome from supporters when he dismounted from the team bus, heading off into the dressing rooms to rounds of applause.

And he seemed to take everything in his stride out on the pitch too, even taking time out to smile as opposition fans chanted: “£80m – you’re having a laugh” as he lay prone in the box after being hit in the midriff by a rocket shot.

At the other end, fans chanted: “Harry Maguire, we want you to stay.” and he joined team jates in acknowledging the travelling fans after a well earned victory.

Rodgers made nine changes at half-time as he aimed to give his players some much-needed game time ahead of the season opener next month.

Speaking before the match, the Foxes chief admitted he was using the Scunthorpe game as an opportunity to use as many of his stars as possible.

“We’re going to play two 45 minutes so lots of players will get the opportunity to play and get their first taste of football this season and I’m looking forward to it,” he explained.

“This phase now is just about the preparation so it’s about building that football fitness. Like I said, they’re not in the position where they can go for that 90 minutes yet.

“It’s about taking those first steps into game situations and it’s all about football fitness, but of course there’s a tactical element to it.

“We’re continuously working on tactical items over the course of pre-season and that will be the first chance we have to see it under a little bit of pressure.”
