Manchester United Football Club made hard work of it, but the three points were secured last night. What did surprise us all was seeing Timothy Fosu-Mensah vs Palace. Fair play to the young man, though, he did superbly all things considered.
It certainly wasn’t pretty by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men last night. In fact, the players looked shattered at times, but the job was done.
In the end, neither Brandon Williams nor Luke Shaw were deemed fit enough to start at Selhurst Park. Enter, Timothy Fosu-Mensah.
Sixteen months. That’s how long it has been since Fosu-Mensah has taken to the field in a competitive fixture. To come in like that, and keep a clean-sheet against Crystal Palace deserves credit.
Sure, Fosu-Mensah wasn’t spectacular or flashy, but United didn’t need that. They asked for defensive solidity, a calm presence in the possession and someone who’ll put a shift in. I think it’s fair to say the Dutchman did a good job in that regard.
Alright, we’re not talking about a Fosu-Mensah who’ll be a regular starter for United. However, we were all reminded of his talents. Don’t forget how promising he looked under Louis van Gaal back in 2016/17. You don’t just lose your ability.
I was just pleased to see Fosu-Mensah come in and put in a decent performance all things considered. Who knows, if given more minutes to get the body fully up to speed and the confidence to start flowing again, he could do a job as a squad player.
Attacking-wise, he looked pretty limited, which indicates to me his future lies as a centre-back or in that holding midfield role. Anyway, for now, I’ll leave you with some pretty pleased United fans after a solid display from the 22-year-old vs Palace…
