It goes without saying that Manchester United desperately need to sign a new centre-back this summer. The Reds conceded 54 league goals last term after Edward Woodward failed to back Jose Mourinho in the defender transfer market just twelve months ago.

United’s vice-chairman will be keen to ensure lightning doesn’t strike twice… No doubt Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have money to spend and I’d be surprised if he doesn’t dip his toes into the centre-back water.

The name that keeps popping up recently is Harry Maguire. Yesterday, the Evening Standard gave us another update in that saga, stating that Leicester City value the 26-year-old at an eyewatering £90million.

However, the aforementioned transfer fee hasn’t put United off. In fact, it may work in the Reds’ favour as Manchester City are also keen on signing Maguire, although Leicester’s asking price could rule Pep Guardiola’s men out of the running.

Understandably, United do deem the £90million valuation as excessive, but it has not dissuaded them from making a move for a player they were hugely keen on signing last summer.

Apparently, Solskjaer wants to sign a top-class centre-half this summer with the club ‘determined’ to keep the deal way below £90million, while United remain hopeful a deal could actually be done for under £80million.

These are huge numbers we’re talking about here, but if United deem him worth the money, the club should stop pussyfooting around and go out there and get the deal done.

The Evening Standard does add that the Reds were interested in Matthijs de Ligt, but they believe the Dutch sensation is heading to FC Barcelona this term. Kalidou Koulibaly’s name is also mentioned as a target, but Maguire apparently fits the bill in terms of signing the best domestic talent.

Maguire would be a huge upgrade on what we have. If we can sign him and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, our defence is already looking in a much better place. Obviously that’s easier said than done, mind, but I feel hopeful the club can push both these deals through before pre-season.
