Cristiano Ronaldo felt Gareth Bale could leave Real Madrid for Manchester United this summer

Real Madrid’s Wales superstar has been subject of interest from Jose Mourinho.

The United boss admitted he would be keen to sign Bale if given the opportunity.

But the forward’s starting role in Madrid’s UEFA Super Cup triumph over United was enough for Mourinho to rule out a switch.

Bale, though, has long been targeted by United, and this summer’s search for a winger saw a deal regularly mooted.

According to the Daily Mail, strike partner and Madrid team-mate Ronaldo even thought Bale may be going to Old Trafford.

“Bale’s position in the team, though, has been under threat”

Ronaldo’s own future was in question earlier this summer due to his accusations of tax fraud in Spain.

It was claimed the Portuguese was determined to leave, but an exit did not materialise.

Bale’s position in the team, though, has been under threat from the prospect of Kylian Mbappe’s arrival.

Zinedine Zidane and Florentino Perez have looked at adding Monaco’s teenage sensation to Madrid’s front three.

And Bale appeared the most likely to make way, as Madrid would have needed to raise funds for Mbappe.

Manchester United were willing to go in for Bale.

And the Daily Mail add the Red Devils would still bid big now if given any sign of encouragement.

Bale has been hampered by injury problems at the Bernabeu, although he is determined to prove his worth for at least another year.
