Over the years, Manchester United player have been jam-packed into the majority of England squads. Though over the years, the Reds have seen their numbers somewhat dwindle in that regard.
However last night, that figure grew by one – with Dean Henderson called into the England team to replace the injured Tom Heaton.
The 22-year-old has been simply magnificent over the last few years, earning back-to-back promotions in League One and the Championship with Shrewsbury Town and Sheffield United respectively.
This term, he’s enjoying his first taste of Premier League football. With just eight top-flight games under his belt, Gareth Southgate has handed the shot-stopper his first big opportunity.
Henderson took to Twitter shortly after getting the call from the Three Lions boss – and he reacted brilliantly to potentially getting the opportunity to pull on that famous England jersey:
This is just class. To me, it feels like Henderson is just a young lad who loves playing his football, and this is what our sport should be about.
Seriously, all credit to him. Henderson has been top drawer for Sheffield United while on loan there and I do hope that upon his return the budding goalie gets his big chance to prove his worth at Old Trafford.
Replacing David de Gea in the sticks isn’t going to be easy, but you know what, I wouldn’t bet against Henderson. He’s a determined young man who’s only going to improve from this point forward.
