Manchester United made three signings over the summer. All of whom have already proven their worth in my opinion.
However, over the last few games, uncertainty has crept into Harry Maguire’s play. He was involved in a crucial mistake that gifted Arsenal a point during the Red Devils’ league meeting with The Gunners, while looking far shakier since that outing.
Last night, the United star’s England performance was coming under scrutiny from the fans, as ‘Slabhead’ put in a poor display in a losing effort – with the Czech Republic beating the Three Lions 2-1.
Both United fans and football fans, in general, weren’t best pleased with the £80million man and his centre-back partner on the day, Michael Keane… One United supporter in particular actually stated that Chris Smalling is a better defender than the 26-year-old…
Now I’m not sure I can agree with the Smalling > Maguire shout, though I do understand the frustration. For what it’s worth, I think Maguire has markedly improved United’s back line and that’s backed up by the fact Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team are amongst those who have conceded fewest in the Premier League this term.
You have to give Maguire some leeway. He’s playing with a relatively new partner on both the domestic and international level and that takes time to adjust and adapt to.
A few average performances don’t suddenly make him a bad defender. I’m betting he’ll come out the other side stronger – starting with a good display during England’s next EURO 2020 qualifier against Bulgaria on Monday.
