That’s according to football consultant Ian McGarry, who said yesterday that the Leicester centre-back would be undergoing a medical at Old Trafford ‘in the next 48 hours’.
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to shore up his defence this summer after the club kept a mere seven clean sheets in 2018/19.
They have already spent £50m on right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka, the highest outlay on a full-back in football history.
And now the Red Devils are set to break another record by forking out a whopping £80m on Maguire.
“The deal is very close to being done from Leicester City to Manchester United”
McGarry claims the 26-year-old has left Leicester’s training camp out in France and is on the verge of sealing his mega-money move to Old Trafford, which will see Solskjaer and co pay £60m upfront and £20m in add-ons.
“The deal is very close to being done from Leicester City to Manchester United,” he told The Transfer Window podcast yesterday.
“It’s our understanding that Maguire has already left Leicester’s training camp in France, will be coming back to the UK to finalise that deal.
“We did tell you it would be £60m upfront plus £20m in add-ons, making him the most expensive defender in the world.
“He’s due to have a medical at Manchester United in the next 48 hours, as soon as the conditions and terms of his contract are finalised.”
Maguire has made 76 appearances for Leicester since completing a £17m switch from Hull in 2017, but it is on international duty with England where the Foxes ace has truly made his name.
He became a key player for Gareth Southgate at the 2018 World Cup, with the Three Lions enjoying a memorable run before being knocked out by Croatia in the semi-finals.
Now the Sheffield-born man is close to becoming the world’s most expensive defender at United – and his soon-to-be boss Solskjaer insists he will have to offload some of his current centre-halves to make room.
“Of course, there’s a limit of players,” he said.
“Whoever performs will be part of the team and whoever doesn’t has a fight to get back in.
“There’s been loads of speculation but I can’t really say anything.
“We’ll work to find a relationship with the ones we’ve got.”
