Manchester United kept pace in the race to secure Champions League football next season, with a thoroughly deserved derby day victory over City.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer got it tactically spot on. Although he gave up possession, Pep Guardiola’s side just couldn’t do anything with it. That was largely due to the back five, leaving Sergio Aguero and co. absolutely no space whatsoever.
The biggest beneficiary of the switch to a back five is undoubtedly Luke Shaw. It has given the Englishman a new lease of life, a new found confidence, a fresh belief.
Shaw was deployed as a centre-back again yesterday, but one that was given the freedom to get forward if the situation allowed. Credit where it’s due, he was absolutely exceptional on both sides of the ball.
It’s just brilliant so see him play with confidence again, which is something we haven’t really seen since before he suffered that horrendous leg injury a few years ago.
I’ll be the first to admit that I thought he was done at United. I’ve never been happier to be proven wrong. His form since the year’s turn has been nothing short of spectacular, which Brandon Williams deserves credit for…
The icing on the cake yesterday was Shaw keeping Riyad Mahrez quiet when the Algerian came on and tried to change the game. Shaw didn’t let it phase him, he didn’t panic. Instead, he rose to the challenge and did his job brilliantly.
As you’d imagine, the United fans were buzzing with the 24-year-oldon social media. We’ve compiled some of the best responses on Twitter below:
