'He's shown more than enough that he is ready' Man Utd urged to move ahead with 23yo as starter

For al their flaws, Manchester United have been excellent at picking their goalkeepers over the last decade or so. David de Gea has been amongst the world’s best, while nobody has a bad word to say about Sergio Romero.

Then you have Dean Henderson, who is certainly giving Ole Gunnar Solskjaer something to think about due to his incredible performances while on loan with Sheffield United.

Now the world’s media are starting to weigh in on the Henderson vs De Gea debate. ESPN’s Shaka Hislop has had his say, as he has urged United to move ahead with the 23-year-old as the starter, claiming that Henderson is ‘ready’, while De Gea ‘has not been himself’ recently…

“The thing for me is, I’m happy to have Henderson between the sticks for Manchester United.” Hislop told ESPN’s YouTube channel.

“I think he’s shown more than enough that he is ready to inherit a big pair of gloves left by David de Gea, who’s simply been outstanding but has not been himself for the last couple of years.”

First and foremost, it’s worth noting that this is a huge decision not to be taken lightly. Who knows if Henderson will be anywhere near as good under the pressure of playing for United? Now I’d certainly bet that he’d be fine, but you just never know.

Hislop is right, though. It does feel as though De Gea is past his peak, while the sell-on value is money United could re-invest back into their squad. Moving on with the younger option could definitely be the way to go.

I guess it all depends on how highly Solskjaer rates Henderson. We’ll undoubtedly learn more during pre-season, if Henderson goes and impresses, then I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Baby Faced Assassin make that bold change…
