How Man Utd boss Solskjaer convinced De Gea to sign new deal as star reaches agreement

De Gea has verbally agreed to a new five-year deal worth £375,000 a week, which the Spain No.1 will sign when he returns from Manchester United’s pre-season tour of Australia and the Far East.

United have been sweating on the future of de Gea who, despite a series of blunders last term, has been their most consistent performer in recent years.

The Spaniard was about to enter the final 12 months of his current deal, but is ready to pledge his future to the Red Devils.

De Gea is said to be impressed with Solskjaer – both on and off the pitch – and that is a major reason behind his decision to stay.

United’s No.1 believes the Norwegian can return the club to their former glory having seen his methods in training.

If he is to do so he will need de Gea to cut out the run of blunders that he experienced towards the end of last season.

Those errors dented the shot-stopper’s confidence, but he is said to be grateful for the support he received from Solskjaer during that difficult period.

The United manager has made a real effort to bring the group together at Old Trafford having taken over a dressing room that was divided.

There was a danger that de Gea was going to be a victim of the divide caused by the club’s top earner Alexis Sanchez.

He had initially told the club he wanted parity with the Chilean’s £500,000-a-week wages.

It was a demand that was not met, but they are ready to make de Gea the highest paid goalkeeper in the world with a weekly wage of £375,000.

The unresolved future of Paul Pogba will now be United’s main focus as they near their Premier League opener against Chelsea.

The Frenchman is pushing for a move away from Manchester after telling reporters he is ready to find a new challenge.

Solskjaer insists he can offer Pogba the challenge he needs and has defended the midfielder’s actions.

He even suggested he is considering making Pogba captain with the armband vacant ahead of the new season.

It could be a concerning sense of deja vu with former boss Jose Mourinho giving Pogba the captaincy in United’s opening fixtures last season only for their relationship to disintegrate.
