The Manchester United midfielder has been heavily linked with a move to the Bernabeu.
Los Blancos have already spent lavishly, but more big-name arrivals are expected.
Pogba is viewed as the missing piece of the jigsaw and Zidane seemingly isn’t ready to compromise.
Nevertheless, he now needs to sell before he can buy with United valuing their prized asset at around £200m.
“Paul Pogba is wanted by Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane”
La Liga expert Graham Hunter says Real’s biggest problem is United’s tough negotiating stance though.
“At the moment, the hardest thing for Real Madrid isn’t about ‘where do we fit him? How do we pay for him?’, although that is an issue,” Hunter said of Pogba on the Transfer Talk podcast.
“The hardest thing they’ve found is that Manchester United are giving no purchase whatsoever in any attempt to loosen Pogba from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad.
“Zidane is determined [to sign Pogba].
“[Pogba was] Zidane’s No 1 priority, ahead of even Hazard, who’s a player that he admires, even ahead of Jovic, who adds goals, even ahead of [Eder] Militao, who joined as a centre-half from Porto, Rodrygo, who was on the books already but has only come now.
“There have been a number of players that have been brought in, [Ferland] Mendy from Lyon at left-back was somebody Zidane was insisting on.
“But at the top of Zidane’s wish list was Pogba, nobody should be in any doubt about that.
“And therefore at the moment, they’re in Canada as we speak, and Florentino is trying to say to his coach ‘It looks like we’re not getting our man, it looks like Pogba is going to be difficult’.
“Now, Zidane’s not accepting that. So there are two sides to the story.
“One – how can they persuade Manchester United, who have decided that ‘we are United, we build around Pogba’ and the recent words from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Pogba’s captaincy really are only an echoing of the executives at Old Trafford saying ‘we can’t find another player like Pogba, he’s a world property for brand, for football, for age, for profile, for their corporate pride’ and as such they don’t want to let him go.
“Part two of the story is Florentino Perez is concerned about having to sell at bargain-basement rates. [Marco] Asensio, Lucas Vazquez, Isco.
“There simply isn’t room for everyone on the books.”
Zidane confirmed last night that he’s ready to sell [Gareth] Bale.
The former Tottenham man was left out of Real’s 3-1 pre-season defeat by Bayern Munich.
“I have to make decisions. We have to change,” Zidane said. “The exit is the coach’s decision, and also of the player, who knows the situation.
“The situation will change, I do not know if in 24 or 48 hours, but it will – and it’s a good thing for everyone.”
