The Manchester United boss has spent big getting in Romelu Lukaku from Everton to lead the line after Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Wayne Rooney left Old Trafford earlier this summer.
Lukaku has hit the ground running at his new club, scoring against Real Madrid in the Super Cup and netting a deadly double against West Ham in Sunday’s Premier League season opener.
But he could have been joined in the United line-up if Mourinho had succeed in landing one of the other star attackers he tried to get this summer.

Journalist Duncan Castles said on The Transfer Window podcast when quizzed about the United manager’s transfer plans: “Antoine Griezmann he tried to get, Neymar he was involved in trying to persuade to come to Manchester United, he’s tried to get Gareth Bale.
“He obviously sees that Man Utd need more of that if he’s to make them what he’s expected to – contenders for the Champions League.”
Meanwhile, Starsport understand Mourinho has given up on landing Danny Rose from Tottenham.
The left-back wants to move to Old Trafford but United won’t follow up their interest with a bid after Spurs made it clear the player is going nowhere.
