Leeds take on bitter rivals United in Australia on Wednesday.

It is the first meeting between the two clubs since 2011, when Michael Owen scored twice to thump the Whites 3-0 at Elland Road in the Carling Cup.

Despite being billed as a ‘friendly’, the game is likely to be anything but that, with a feisty encounter expected at Perth Glory’s Optus Stadium.

But Leeds star Hernandez admits he has plans to fraternise with the enemy come the final whistle.

“I have a lot of his shirts, but I want the new one”

The ex-Spain winger was team mates with current Red Devils playmaker Juan Mata at Valencia for several years back in the early days of their career.

And Hernandez says he has texted the former Chelsea midfielder about swapping shirts at full time on Wednesday, with the 34-year-old insisting he wants “the new one”.

“When I arrived here, I texted him and he texted me ‘See you Wednesday’,” Hernandez said.

“He told me he wants my shirt and I want his shirt. I have a lot of his shirts, but I want the new one.

“He was my team-mate for four years in Valencia and my room-mate and I’m happy to play against him.”

After last season’s bitter disappointment at missing out on promotion to the Premier League, Hernandez says his team mates are raring to go one step further this time.

“We want to play this game in the Premier League in the future, we hope,” he said.

“I think it’s very important for the fans, because we want to see this game more times in the future and I think it’s a good moment for the fans to enjoy it.

“I’m sure they’ve been waiting for this game for a long time. Not just in England, outside of England. Leeds is one of the biggest clubs and it’s a big moment for our fans.

“Last season was a hard finish for us but, after some days, after the last game against Derby, you can take positive things from the season.

“Obviously we weren’t promoted to the Premier League. We had this in our hands all season and lost this in the last game.

“But I think a good season is coming because we keep the block, we know now the Bielsa methods, we know what he wants and I think it’s an advantage for us.”
