Bernardo Silva and Leroy Sane were on target in a 2-0 win for Manchester City against their bitter rivals which saw them return to the top of the Premier League table.
As a result of their crucial victory, Pep Guardiola’s men are now heavy favourites to pip Liverpool to the title.
Reds fans found themselves in the unusual position of cheering on Manchester United but they soon grew frustrated with one of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s players.
David De Gea was at fault for Sane’s goal while he also could have dealt better with Silva’s opener.
After Sane’s tame effort found the back of the net via the goalkeeper’s shin, Liverpool supporters flooded social media with criticism.
“Thanks David De Gea,” one fan fumed on Twitter.
“De Gea… thanks for nothing. Shocking yet again,” a second wrote.
“F****** s***, thanks a lot Man Utd. De Gea is f****** s****,” a third raged.
In other Man Utd news:
“Hey never tell me De Gea is better than Alisson again k thanks,” another Liverpool fan said.
While a fifth fan added: “Thanks for nothing mr De Gea.”
City goalscorer Sane has been a fringe figure for City in recent weeks but stepped off the bench to make his mark.
“It was a difficult game,” he said. “The first half we had problems but in the end we did it well. We were patient and played our game.
“Pep Guardiola always tries to help us to see what we did not so good, as well as what we did good, showing us examples [at half-time].
“In every game if you sit on the bench you hope to come on. Especially in the derby. I was waiting and hoping.
“When Raheem passed the ball I knew I had to react quickly.
“We just try to enjoy and work hard and focus on us. It’s in our hands.”
