Man United best-placed to seal short-term deal for struggling 22yo, negotiations advanced considerably: report

Man United are the club best-placed to seal Luka Jovic on a short-term loan deal, it is today being claimed.

The story comes from AS, who claim that Real Madrid are looking to let the struggling 22-year-old leave on loan. Apparently, Zinedine Zidane is looking to give minutes to Borja Mayoral, while also saving some of Jovic’s salary by moving him on for a season.

At this point, United are labelled as best-placed to seal the short-term deal. That’s despite competition from AS Roma and both Milan clubs…

It is thought that negotiations with both the player’s agent and Real Madrid have advanced considerably, with United seemingly closing in on signing the young striker.

Way back in November of 2019, it was claimed that Man United were ‘monitoring’ Luka Jovic. Interest in the Serbian is seemingly nothing new, then…

However, his problems at Madrid were evident. He couldn’t find the back of the net, while playing time became a real problem.

In the two seasons prior, Jovic absolutely lit up the Bundesliga, so he does have the temperament and ability to play at the highest-level. Perhaps all he needs is a change of scenery.

Where would Jovic fit in at United?

He’s better than Odion Ighalo, that’s for sure. At worst, he’d be back-up to Anthony Martial.

However, a fully fit and firing Jovic could push Martial hard for that starting job. Both are different players, so they could be utilised in different scenarios depending on what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants from certain games.

On a short-term deal, it could be a shrewd signing. However, I don’t like the idea of helping a player develop, only strengthening another European powerhouse in the process. If there was some sort of option to buy Jovic included in the contact, I’d certainly be more interested…
