Manchester United have been, and will continue to be linked with every single name under the sun. That just comes with the territory…

Yesterday, there was a rather bizarre story posted in Spain, namely Sport (Thursday print), translated by Sport Witness. They state that United ‘could return’ for the 27-year-old Philippe Coutinho this summer – but only if Mauricio Pochettino is appointed as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s successor by then…

Wait, this story gets even stranger… apparently, Coutinho, due to his Liverpool ties, has ‘absolutely closed’ the possibility of making a move to United. In fact, the Reds are the ‘only team’ the Brazilian wouldn’t join…

Coutinho is currently on loan at Bayern Munich, from FC Barcelona, but this story is just all a bit odd. First and foremost, United must know that Coutinho isn’t going to make the move to Old Trafford, so why they would continue to be interested is just mind-boggling.

For me, this sounds like pure paper talk in order to fill the time before the action starts up again. I’d expect we’ll hear more stories like this in the not-too-distant future, too…
