Man United identify top De Gea replacement should keeper leave club: report

Manchester United need to start looking further into the future than the next twelve months.

This club is in desperate need of a major overhaul and it’s down to Edward Woodward to help Ole Gunnar Solskjaer out in that regard. As you expect, United’s top players are hesitant about wanting to stay here. At the end of the day, they’re ambitious.

Amongst those yet to commit to a new long-term deal is David de Gea. Although he has made a couple of high-profile errors recently, I don’t think you can doubt his ability. For me, he’s still the best in the business.

Now, though, it seems as though the club are beginning to plan for life without the 28-year-old. According to an exclusive from The Metro, it is being claimed that United have identified Jan Oblak as their top replacement should De Gea leave.

The article comes on the same day when The Guardian say that De Gea is amongst three players considering leaving should United fail to make the top four, and although he has twelve months left on his deal, the Red Devils’ hand may well be forced.

Apparently, when all the De Gea to Real Madrid talk emerged in 2016, Oblak was United’s top target back then and it’s easy to see why that talk has started once more.

The Slovenian is probably the only keeper who in the world who is on De Gea’s level. If I’m being bold, I’d say Oblak is slightly superior at this point in time – particularly after De Gea’s worst season over the last few years.

With a winding down deal you worry about what sort of fee you could get for De Gea, while Oblak would cost in excess of £100million, but if any club can afford it, United certainly can…
