Manchester United have apparently made contact with the agent of Thiago, whose future still seemingly lies away from Bayern Munich…
Earlier this week, we covered a story from Bild which claimed that United had in fact opened talks in regards to signing the Spaniard. Well, a week later and we have another claim that has backed that up.
Now, Fabrizio Romano has given us another small update via his Twitter account. Apparently, United have made contact with the 29-year-old’s agent, though he stresses that the Reds haven’t started talks with Bayern Munich.
Thiago has been heavily linked with a move to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, though for whatever reason, our fierce rivals haven’t managed to get a deal done. Romano claims that scouse interest still remains. However, there’s an opening there if United want to take it.
My immediate thought is that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer probably likes Thiago as a player. Heck, who wouldn’t? Is it really the signing United need at this point?
Where would Thiago fit in?
After acquiring Donny van de Beek, United are currently well-stacked in midfield. Sure, Thiago can play a little deeper than his Dutch counterpart, but is he really the defensive-minded player that the Red Devils need?
Personally, I’d like to see Solskjaer prioritise other areas first. I’m looking at centre-back, right-wing and striker as the positions where further work is needed. If Edward Woodward can sort all of those out first and Thiago is still available, maybe it’s a move worth making.
The Spaniard would have to accept the fact he wouldn’t be a week-in-week-out starter, though. That in itself makes me further doubt the move as Thiago is at that stage in his career where he’ll want to be playing regularly.
Does United contact with Thiago signal an intent to sign him? Or should the Reds look elsewhere? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.
