Man United star was pressured into signing new contract by Louis van Gaal: report
Louis van Gaal pressured Manchester United’s David de Gea into putting pen to paper on a new Old Trafford contract back in 2015, according to Diario Gol, as per the Daily Express.
At the time, the Spaniard was subject to some heavy interest from Real Madrid but the deal didn’t happen. Shortly after that transfer window, the goalkeeper put pen to paper on a new long-term contract and apparently, we have Van Gaal to thank for that.
The Iron Tulip told De Gea to show a commitment to the Red Devils, and at the time, Sergio Romero was installed as our new #1 goalkeeper.
To be brutally honest, it doesn’t seem to have affected De Gea one jot. This is a player who seems totally content with life at Manchester United, and even if he has been upset by the whole scenario, he certainly hasn’t shown it.
De Gea is one of the best goalkeepers on the planet and right now, he’s a key member of Jose Mourinho’s plans. He’s been here for way over five years now and slowly but surely, the Spain international is moving up the ranks in terms of elite shot-stoppers to play for our famous club. Eventually, though, you feel that a move to Real Madrid is inevitable.
