Manchester United thought they had found themselves an absolute bargain when he signed for free back in January 2018. Unfortunately, it has all ended pretty badly. Alexis Sanchez is set to have his contract terminated by mutual consent.
The story comes from The Mirror, who state that the United star has seen his contract terminated by mutual consent after just 45 appearances for the Red Devils.
Sanchez is now a free agent and looking likely to join Inter Milan permanently, now that his £500,000-a-week deal has been prematurely ended.
With two years left to run, my immediate thought is that it seems strange Sanchez was willing to just write off his deal. After all, that’s an awful lot of money he’s leaving on the table. Perhaps he just wants to play football again?
United are set to confirm the news tomorrow, and although he’ll have to take a considerable pay-cut, he’s set to link up with another ex-Red, Romelu Lukaku, on a long-term deal.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing, hey? On paper, this looked like a signing that would turn our future around. Instead, all Sanchez brought to the table was negativity.
He’d hamper the development of both Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, while taking home an astronomical weekly wage which probably would have upset the dressing room somewhat.
Now, though, United are saving a small fortune by getting Sanchez off their wage bill. Hopefully, that money is set to be re-invested into the squad, as a deal for Jadon Sancho seems to be edging closer.
There is no hard feelings with Sanchez and I genuinely hope he can get back to his best with Inter Milan. By all accounts, he has been playing brilliantly post-lockdown so long may that continue. Again, it’s just a massive shame it didn’t work out for him here.
All the best, Alexis!
