Manchester United have been linked wth names aplenty this summer. Today, a new name is thrown into the mix; Alex Telles.
The story comes from Correio da Manhã‘s Tuesday print edition, translated via Sport Witness. Apparently, the Red Devils are ‘going to advance’ and try to sign the 27-year-old left-back from FC Porto this summer.
Understandably, United are said to be more confident about spending money in Portugal following the success of Bruno Fernandes. It goes without saying that the Reds have always been pretty solid when signing players from the Primeira Liga. Just ask Cristiano Ronaldo…
Anyway, Porto are set to demand £27m (€30m) to let Telles leave this summer, and they won’t budge on their asking price due to how powerful the clubs are who are linked with a move for him.
Telles’ current deal expires in 2021 and he currently has a release clause of £36m (€40m). That could explain their willingness to sell this summer, so the left-back doesn’t walk away for free next summer.
Sport Witness suggest to take this transfer rumour with a pinch of salt for now. However, it’s definitely an interesting one to keep an eye on…
Where would Alex Telles fit in?
This is exactly the problem. I’m just not sure… You have Luke Shaw who is playing the best football of his United career and a Brandon Williams who has just signed a new contract.
Shaw is currently out injured, though I’m fairly sure the starting job will still be his when he returns next season.
Then you have to factor in Telles as an unknown quantity in England. He’s never played here before and it could well take him time to settle in.
Right now, it feels as though other areas should be the priority, though I can somewhat see why united are interested given the low price-tag.
