The Red Devils are closing in on a deal for the Foxes defender.
But former Wales striker turned pundit Dean Saunders reckons United have missed a trick by not raiding Spurs.
Alderweireld has an intriguing clause in his current Spurs contract.
It states that the north Londoners must green light his departure if a club lodges a £25m bid by Thursday.
“Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been linked with Harry Maguire”
Leicester, meanwhile, are willing to sell Maguire but are demanding top whack to part with their prized asset.
“It’s got ridiculous now, hasn’t it? £80m for Harry Maguire,” Saunders ranted on talkSPORT.
“It’s not his fault, but where is it going to stop?
“Would you take Toby Alderweireld for £25m or Harry Maguire for £80m?
“You can’t get your money back on Alderweireld, he’s 30, but he’s probably a better player right now.
“As a striker, I’d be thinking to myself, ‘If I can get Maguire out in the channels and get him isolated, he’s not mobile’.”
Despite speculation linking Alderweireld with a move away from north London, the experienced star has suggested he’s not going anywhere.
“Everything can go quick but all I’m doing is focusing on Spurs and being fit for the start of the season,” he said following Spurs’ 3-2 pre-season win over Juventus.
“I think the manager [Mauricio Pochettino] knows I am committed to the club and the team but you never know in football.
“A game like [Juventus] I was captain – so that shows the manager has trust in me and I’m showing the right attitude.
“Again, it [a club triggering the clause] can happen but my focus is on Spurs and in my head I will be playing for Spurs.
“I try to deliver the job I need to do – I’m happy and that’s it. I try to come back fit.
“Of course, everyone has had a good holiday but like [against Juventus] we showed, we are where we want to be at the moment.”
