Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told who has to partner Harry Maguire in defence

The Red Devils look set to complete an £80m move for Leicester defender Maguire in the coming days.

Manchester United have struggled defensively in recent months and ended up conceding 54 goals in the Premier League last season.

The only defender to really come out of the season with any credit was Sweden international Victor Lindelof.

Solskjaer has strengthened the right-back spot with the acquisition of Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace and Maguire would make the back-line even better.

“I think the way Lindelof finished the season, yeah [he should partner Maguire]”

Paul Mariner

Chris Smalling and Phil Jones have both signed new contracts in the last eight months and will be used more as back-up should Maguire make the move.

Eric Bailly struggled with injuries last season but remains, but according to ESPN FC pundit and former Arsenal striker Paul Mariner, it is Lindelof who is the main man.

He is also impressed with the Wan-Bissaka and insists that he does his job well.

“I think the way Lindelof finished the season, yeah [he should partner Maguire],” Mariner told ESPN FC.

“If they’re going to keep him, because there are rumours he’s going to be going.

“Wan-Bissaka, I like Wan-Bissaka as a player.

“As a full-back, at least he defends, at least he does his job. And he can help you going forward.”

Liverpool legend Steve Nicol says the signings of Wan-Bissaka and Maguire make Manchester United stronger at the back.

“It makes [the defence] way stronger,” Nicol said.

“They’re both good signings.

“You could argue about the money all day but the fact is the both of them are way better than what they’ve got right now.”
