Manchester United have been linked with a host of midfield targets this month as Ole Gunanr Solskjaer looks to bolster his squad in pursuit of a top four finish.
Inter Milan’s Ivan Perisic and PSV Eindhoven’s Steven Bergwijn are thought to be on the club’s radar but the latest reports suggest Cagliari’s Barella is also taking their fancy.
Italian publication Gazetta dello Sport claim the Red Devils face competition from Inter Milan but the Serie A giants are struggling with Financial Fair Play constraints.
They state Barella would be interested in a move to the Premier League and United could now take advantage of the situation.
The report states, according to Sport Witness, the player and the club would find it ‘impossible to say no’ should United launch an offer of £43m.
Chelsea have been weighing up a move for Barella this month with Maurizio Sarri looking to find a replacement for Cesc Fabregas, who joined Monaco.
The Blues have been the clear frontrunners to sign him but now face a battle with United with just five days of the window left to go.
However, Cagliari’s sporting director Mario Passetti recently poured cold water on any side striking a deal this month, instead hinting no business would be considered until the summer.
“Barella? There has been a lot of talk concerning Nicolo but we have always been saying the same thing every time, he won’t be leaving us at this moment in time,” he told Sport.
“Summer sale? Well let’s see what happens in the summer but as of now, Nicolo will be staying with us here at Cagliari.
“Nicolo seems happy here and he always trains hard and plays hard for us which is important.
“Our goal isn’t to sell him since we have important objectives.
“Let’s wait and see what happens in the future and we will then take a decision.”
Barella, who often plays in the centre of midfield, is under contract with Cagliari until 2022.
