Manchester United Football Club are seriously struggling in midfield – both in terms of quality and depth. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s task has been made all-the-harder due to the fact that both Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba are long-term casualties.
It was to be expected that the Old Trafford club were going to be linked with names aplenty during the mid-season transfer window and it’s safe to say we haven’t been disappointed.
This morning, a new name was thrown into the ring by ESPN; Ajax’s Donny van de Beek.
Their report states that United are considering a January move for the talented 22-year-old, with the Baby Faced Assassin pushing Edward Woodward to secure reinforcements this month.
Our Norweigan leader has been given the green light to make signings during the transfer window, though he has remained adamant he’ll only make a move if the right player becomes available.
What’s promising from a fan standpoint is that ESPN state United believe a January deal for Van de Beek could actually be done due to the fact that Ajax didn’t progress into the Champions League knockout stages.
Van de Beek is valued ‘in excess’ of £50million by the Dutch outfit, meaning he certainly wouldn’t come cheaply.
This is a player who’d bring in some much-needed quality to a United midfield who have largely struggled during this term. His ball-keeping skills are excellent and retaining possession is something where the Reds needs vast improvement.
If there’s even a slim chance United can pull this move off, then they should go all-out and try to force a deal through, though I definitely have my doubts…
