For the last few years, defending became a real issue for Manchester United. It’s why constant transfer stories to centre-backs would dominate the back pages.

Well, credit where it’s due, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has gone a long way to fixing that problem. He’s made two brilliant signings in the form of Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, while some dead-wood has been moved on.

It’s why I find the gossip columns linking United with a move for Samuel Umtiti a little confusing. We covered a story a couple of weeks ago from Sport, in which it was claimed the Reds were willing to make a ‘significant effort’ to sign the Frenchman.

Today, Sport are back at it again in their Friday print edition. The translation comes from the ever-brilliant Sport Witness.

It is being claimed that United have already contacted the 26-year-old’s entourage, while Sport also adds that the Reds are ‘one of the most interested’ clubs…

Furthermore, no official proposal has been made as of yet, but the interest from United is seemingly concrete – and I’m not sure why.

Umtiti is injury prone, which is the exact problem we’ve had with the likes of Phil Jones, Eric Bailly and Marcos Rojo. Why go down that road again?

Plus, Maguire is in great form, Victor Lindelof is getting better, Axel Tuanzebe is learning and Chris Smalling may well come back. Surely other areas should be prioritised?

Barca are aware of Umtiti’s diminishing value and understand it may be difficult to sell for the £45m that they’re after. Honestly, though, I don’t think he’s worth the risk given his horrendous injury issues.
