Manchester United are set to splash the cash in the summer with a new centre-back Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s priority.
Executive vice-chairman Woodward is expected to meet Solskjaer’s demands for a new addition and Starsport understands Leicester’s Harry Maguire is top of the list.
However, some United fans are convinced Woodward could be looking to secure a transfer for Ajax sensation Matthijs de Ligt.
The Netherlands international looks likely to be on the move this summer with a host of European clubs tracking him – most notably Barcelona.
One United fan took to social media platform Reddit to declare they’d spotted Woodward going through security at Schiphol Airport, in Amsterdam.
And that prompted wild speculation from United fans the transfer chief could be in Ajax to work on a deal for De Ligt.
“Translation: De Ligt confirmed,” said one fan.
“Thats a De Ligtful news,” said another.
“Scenes if we stole De Ligt from under Barca’s noses,” a third added.
The comments came after:
While another predicted Woodward could be looking to recruit club legend Edwin van der Sar as a director of football.
“Edwin VDS as DoF confirmed,” a supporter said.
And another joked a return for defender Daley Blind is on the cards.
“He’s bringing Daley Blind back.”
However, any secret plans United supporters may think Woodward has up his sleeve for De Ligt may be premature.
Woodward was expected to be in Amsterdam this week for an European Club Association meeting.
The European Club Association will discuss major changes to the Champions League in a meeting with UEFA, where one of the main topics will be potential promotion and relegation.
AS for De Ligt, United will have to all serious string if they are to prise the defender away from Ajax.
Barcelona are already thought to be in pole position for the 19-year-old.
