Jurgen Klopp’s side joined United in the quarter-finals in style last night as they outclassed Bayern Munich in a stunning 3-1 win.
The Premier League duo will find out their next opponents in tomorrow’s draw, alongside fellow Premier League clubs Manchester City and Tottenham.
Manchester United pulled off a remarkable comeback against PSG last week as they continued their renaissance under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Phelan has been essential in the club’s turnaround but he risked the wrath of United fans last night as he appeared to praise rivals City and Liverpool.
“Well … European football is alive and well up and down the M62 #NorthernPowerhouse,” he said on Twitter.
And Red Devils fans took the opportunity to remind Phelan which club he represents.
“Mike you’re a legend and your Twitter is class but couldn’t care less about any northern team but United,” one supporter responded.
Phelan’s gaffe comes amid news that:
“European football is alive and well up and down the M62.”

And United fans continued to hammer Phelan for his comment.
“United is the only northern team that matters Mike,” said one on Twitter.
While another added: “Three too many English teams left in it Mike mate.”
“No Mikey. We hate pool,” tweeted a third.
And one supporter replied with a hilarious exaggeration.
“Part of me just died,” they said.
United are currently fifth in the Premier League, two points behind fourth-placed Arsenal.
Solskjaer’s side return to action on Saturday as they visit Wolves in the FA Cup.
