The Spaniard signed for the Red Devils from Athletic Bilbao for £28.8million in 2014.
But in an eye-opening interview with Unscripted, Herrera revealed he wanted to move to Old Trafford more than two years earlier.
Herrera was part of the Bilbao squad that defeated United 3-2 at their own ground in 2012.
“I played against United two years and a half before joining and I will never forget that day,” he said.
“We were so happy to play against United, coming to the biggest and most historic stadium in England.
“When I saw the stadium I thought ‘It must be good to play in front of these games every weekend’.
“I then played one of the best games of my career.
“But that day, I didn’t say to anyone, but I realised one day I was going to put the red shirt on and enjoy Old Trafford.”
Sure enough, the next time he played at Old Trafford was in the famous red jersey.
“My first game was against Valencia in pre-season and the feelings were amazing,” Herrera added.
“After a long summer, the moment to play for United came and it was fantastic.”
The clip emerged back in 2017 but has was reposted on a Reddit channel devoted to United yesterday.
“This guy should be our captain, give him a new contract,” one viewer wrote.
Another agreed, saying: “Make him the f***ing captain already.”
A third echoed the view, adding: “Future captain in my opinion.”
While a fourth simply commented: “I love this man.”
