Before Bruno Fernandes’ arrival at Old Trafford, Manchester United’s clear weakness was midfield.

Although that area is still a problem, it’s now more in the defensive portion of the middle as opposed to the attack third. Late last night, The Telegraph ran a story linking the Red Devils with Declan Rice.

He’s obviously built in the holding-midfield role as opposed to Fernandes’ ability to change the game further up the field. Maybe United see him as a long-term replacement to an ageing Nemanja Matic.

Anyway, The Telegraph claim that United are ‘interested’ in the talented 21-year-old, while Chelsea are also keen.

Rice is a young up-and-comer with the world at his feet. He’s yet another supreme young man who has benefitted from the excellent West Ham academy system. Make no mistake about it, the London club are going to make a hell of a lot of money from the youngster’s eventual sale – be it this summer or later in the future…

I like Rice. However, I wonder if we have a similar player in Scott McTominay, perhaps even a better version already at the club… Is it really worth the £70-80million+ that it’d take to prise him away from West Ham? I’m not sure…
