That’s the verdict of ESPN pundit Craig Burley.
Solskjaer has won eight games out of eight since replacing sacked Jose Mourinho in mid-December.
His latest victory came away at Arsenal, with goals from Alexis Sanchez, Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial handing them a 3-1 win in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
Next month United will lock horns with PSG in the last 16 of the Champions League.
“If he knocks PSG out of the Champions League and gets top four, I think he’s getting the job”
And Burley believes success in that tie, along with a top-four finish in the Premier League, will land him the job on a full-time basis.
“If he knocks PSG out of the Champions League and gets top four, I think he’s getting the job.” he told ESPN FC.
Burley’s co-pundit Steve Nicol then chipped in, agreeing that he should be given the permanent reins if he achieves both of those objectives.
“Why would you not?” Nicol said.
“We’re sitting here talking about the Manchester United of old, so if that’s the case, which it looks like, why don’t you want it?
“Maybe it was ‘cos of the teams they had played, but this team has turned into a team that expects to win – which is an incredible turnaround.”
United reportedly want to make Mauricio Pochettino their manager at the end of the season.
The Tottenham boss has long been linked with a move to Old Trafford, and the sacking of Mourinho only intensified such speculation.
But Burley thinks Solskjaer is giving United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward a managerial dilemma.
“I tell you what, we talk about managers, Solskjaer’s given a problem to Pochettino now as well as he is I suppose to Ed Woodward,” he said.
“And it is still kind of early, but it’s eight games, it’s eight wins.
“But we’re seeing the injuries at Tottenham, there’s no doubt United want Pochettino. There’s no doubt whatever Spurs fans say that his head will be turned somewhat. It doesn’t mean he would take the job, but his head will be turned.
“And all of a sudden, depending what happens at Real Madrid ‘cos that’s another club that’s supposedly chasing him, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is coming more to the fore, more to the fore and as they move into this new stadium Tottenham, Pochettino might find himself in a place where he’s not actually up for the United job, he’s not in the frame for it and he’s gonna have to stick with Tottenham who are not gonna spend money and he may even lose players.
“I am [changing my mind about Solskjaer] a little, but again I think there’s due diligence that needs to be done. If you’re giving me a choice between Solskjaer and Pochettino, it’s a no brainer. But he might not be available, he might not want it, they might not want him.
“You can’t win eight games and not at least be in with a chance.”
