A potential Manchester United transfer for Ousmane Dembele is nothing new, though we have another update on that saga for you this lunchtime…
The update comes from Duncan Castles in the Daily Record. It’s worth noting that Castles is normally pretty good when it comes to United sources, so it’s worth taking notice here.
Anyway, Castles states that United have ‘progressed talks’ over signing the talented 23-year-old Dembele. Apparently, the 20-time Premier League champions have proposed a season-loan deal, though FC Barcelona would prefer a sale.
United officials, including Edward Woodward, have spoken to Barca counterparts about the viability of a move. What’s interesting is that the Catalan outfit would be prepared to sanction a loan deal, though they’d like an obligation to buy from United included.
What’s worrying is that Dembele would need to be convinced to make a Premier League move. However, Barca’s financial troubles may force the Frenchman’s hand. Particularly if they can get close to the €105m fee they paid to sign the winger…
Should United take the risk on Dembele?
The obvious concern is Dembele’s injury history. It’s not great and that’s largely why he’s failed in Catalonia. Signing someone who struggles to keep fit in Spain and bringing them to the more physical English game is a massive gamble.
One thing you cannot deny is Dembele’s talent. He’s a gifted young man who, when at 100%, is capable of tearing apart any defence in world football. It’s all about how highly Ole Gunnar Solskjaer values him and weighing up the risk-reward.
For me, if United are considering spending big on Dembele, why not just go the whole hog and get the guy they really want; Jadon Sancho.
