United have gone through a rollercoaster of a season, initially under Jose Mourinho before his dismissal allowed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a crack at the whip.
And life started off brilliantly for the Norwegian, breaking the club record for away wins in a row while also knocking Paris St-Germain out of the Champions League.
But it was not long before Solskjaer’s bubble had burst and now seven defeats in nine reflects one of the worst periods of form for the Red Devils in decades.
The defeat to Manchester City on Wednesday only amplified the magnitude of the size of the job the former Cardiff manager has on his plate.
But behind the scenes, the former Cardiff boss has to contend with a number of powerful characters as transfer rumours swirl.
One of them is Paul Pogba, with many reports indicating that the Frenchman is desperate for a move to Real Madrid.
The Frenchman has had his head turned by Real Madrid, with Zinedine Zidane keen to bring in his compatriot to kickstart his second reign in charge.
The Bernabeu boss has returned to Los Blancos, 10 months after resigning, and is being given huge funds to rebuild the side after a disappointing season.
And AS are reporting that United stars are so confident Pogba will leave this summer that they are openly joking about it in training.
But Solskjaer is desperate to keep the 26-year-old as he looks to reassert United as a powerhouse in the Premier League.
“Paul is happy here, he’s playing well,” he said .
“He’s going to be a big, big part. You like to build your team round him and that hasn’t changed at all.”
