United have found themselves in a bit of a predicament when it comes to contracts this season, with a number of hurdles yet to be cleared.
Herrera joins a long list of players locked in negotiations with the club who has a deal running out this summer.
It means if an agreement is not struck between now and the end of June, the Spaniard will be allowed to leave on a free.
However, Herrera has cemented his position in the first-team under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – alongside Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic.
The 29-year-old does not want to leave, but there is reluctance on the side of United to give him a long-term contract at his age.
Herrera is demanding £200,000-a-week which is also pushing the club into indecision – but the sharks are circling.
The former Athletic Bilbao has no shortage of options should his time at Old Trafford come to an end.
Arsenal have emerged as shock contenders but Paris St-Germain are in the front seat and can offer the midfielder the terms he wants.
And Herrera has given the clearest indication that a United exit is on the cards after the PSG rumours.
Speaking on the reports, he said: ”It is logical when you have three months of contract and there are stop selections.
“I already knew something was going to come out. I take it as normal, I focus on playing football in the month-and-a-half that remains.
“The rest is left to my agent, both the possible renewal with United and if you talk to another club for my departure.”
And United fans are up in arms over the potential move, who have taken a considerable liking to the Spain international due to his tenacity and passion.
One fan tweeted: “I don’t understand why Herrera’s new contract is not on the table yet??!! He is the future captain of the club, hard to find such character nowadays. Plays with heart and he never gives up!! Better pay him 150K rather than paying 350K for Sanchez.”
While this supporter said: “Why is Herrera not being offered a new contract? Not rocket science guys.”
And this fan said: “Herrera’s passion for the red Jersey on and off the pitch can’t be matched. He gives his all on pitch, the brother deserves that 200k and even more.”
