That’s the verdict of United star Jesse Lingard in the aftermath of his side’s quarter-final elimination.

Messi was in sublime form and he produced an outstanding goal to put Barca ahead early on the night.

Leaving Ashley Young in his wake, he then nutmegged Fred before driving an unstoppable shot beyond David De Gea.

United’s goalkeeper then made an uncharacteristic howler to give Messi his second goal of the night.

The Argentine striker shot with his weaker foot from 25 yards out and watched as his effort squirmed under De Gea’s body and into the net.

Philippe Coutinho then added a third goal with a sumptuous long-range strike in the second half.

Lingard spent much of the game chasing shadows, as did his team-mates.

And the Red Devil’s attacker said Messi proved once again that he is one of the best to ever grace a football pitch.

“You can’t make errors in these games,” Lingard told BT Sport.

“We dominated for the first 15 minutes, we had chances and the game could have been different.

“Lionel Messi brought his A-game tonight, he’s one of the best in the world.

“He’s different class, he and Cristiano Ronaldo are the best players of the last decade, everyone agrees on that one. Messi showed his quality.

“We have to aspire to get to that level of Barcelona, we can get there but we have loads of work to do.

“If we want to get back to Man Utd’s true level, true traditions, we have to challenge Barcelona.

“We were always underdogs but we had to back ourselves and believe. Chances in these big games are massive.”

United return to Premier League action against Everton on Sunday (1.30pm).
