It seems as though Angel Gomes has certainly been dragging his heels in regards to signing a Manchester United contract extension – which is somewhat justified to an extent.
We’re talking about a gifted young man who has seldom been given the opportunity to showcase his talents this season. For any young player, that has to hurt.
Well, Gomes’ contract expiry date now looms large. His current terms expire in June, meaning he’d be free to walk away from Old Trafford – however, special measures are set to be put in place due to the global pandemic that’s hitting the world hard right now.
It seems as though the Reds aren’t giving up getting Gomes tied down to a new longer contract, mind. That’s according to ESPN, who state that United are still ‘holding out hope’ that the talented starlet will sign a new deal – extending his contract.
Six senior appearances this term just isn’t enough for the 19-year-old, particularly after such an impressive pre-season tour. The situation has only been made tougher for Gomes due to Bruno Fernandes’ arrival, but surely we’d all like to see the Englishman given a chance over the likes of Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata?
Unless there is problems going on behind the scenes that we just don’t know about, it does feel a little harsh to me that Gomes is still waiting for his opportunity. ESPN adds that Chelsea are keen on signing him, while I don’t doubt other sides will be interested.
I just hope United don’t lose him. Instead, I’m praying Gomes follows Tahith Chong’s lead and puts pen on paper – then, the first-team opportunities may well follow…
