Last summer, Harry Maguire signed for Manchester United from Leicester City – that was after much talk about a potential move for then-Ajax centre-back, Matthijs de Ligt.
In the end, the Dutchman would opt for Juventus instead. However, the defender isn’t exactly lighting it up in the Serie A. Now, United may well get a second bite at that cherry…
The story comes from ESPN, who claim that United will renew their interest in the mega-talented 20-year-old. The article also adds that Juventus are ready to listen to offers.
De Ligt has started 17 out of 26 Serie A games this term, with sources telling ESPN that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is in the market for a new centre-back this summer. De Ligt is on a list of potential targets alongside Kalidou Koulibaly.
The Dutchman is regarded as having the perfect profile of a Solskjaer signing, though there’s an acceptance that Juventus are unlikely to sanction a move away for De Ligt – unless he forces through a move.
Right now, United are actually looking pretty well-stocked in terms of centre-backs. Eric Bailly is playing great while Axel Tuanzebe is only getting better. Then you have Victor Lindelof and the aforementioned Maguire.
That said, if Solskjaer is totally in love with what De Ligt has to offer, it’d be naive if United didn’t do their due diligence and at least explore the possibility.
Whisper it quietly, but I could potentially see some sort of swap deal involving Paul Pogba taking place. That would make sense, right…?
