Cristiano Ronaldo believed Gareth Bale was edging towards a move to Manchester United this summer.
Real Madrid’s Welsh superstar has been the subject of serious interest from Jose Mourinho.
The United boss admitted he would love to sign Bale if given the opportunity.
But the forward’s starting role in Madrid’s UEFA Super Cup triumph over United was enough for Mourinho to rule out a switch.
Bale, though, has long been targeted by United, and this summer’s search for a winger saw a deal regularly mooted.
According to the Daily Mail, strike partner and Madrid team-mate Ronaldo even thought Bale may be going to Old Trafford.
Mourinho tried to buy three world-class players this summer.
That’s according to Duncan Castles of the Daily Record.
On the The Transfer Window podcast he said: “Antoine Griezmann he [Mourinho] tried to get, Neymar he was involved in trying to persuade to come to Manchester United, he’s tried to get Gareth Bale.
“He obviously sees that Man Utd need more of that if he’s to make them what he’s expected to – contenders for the Champions League.”
Danny Rose’s desperate bid to get out of Tottenham looks to have backfired.
Starsport understands the Spurs left-back is no longer a target for the Red Devils.
United have given up on his signing after being told he will not be leaving Spurs this summer.
Rose publicly spoke out about his unhappiness at the north London club after learning Mourinho was interested in his signature.
