Manchester United agree terms for Harry Maguire’s £80 million summer transfer – reports

Manchester United has reportedly agreed on terms with Leicester City for the £80 million transfer of Harry Maguire, according to reports. United have been looking to sign the player this summer, even having a £70 million bid rejected by the Premier League club, who have made it clear that they will accept nothing less than £80 million.

It is suggested that Leicester advised the England defender that they would let him leave this summer if United, or another club, met the clubs price for the player. Reports also suggested during the week that Maguire had asked Leicester to let him leave this summer, whether that was true or not, I do not know. The player did not hand in a transfer request.

It was suggested earlier in July that United and Magure had already agreed on personal terms although it was also stated that both clubs distanced themselves from the rumour. Bleacher Report has reported that United and Leicester are now in agreement and that Maguire’s move to the Old Trafford club is imminent. At least they are not stating within 48 hours!

If these reports are true, United will have spent less than £150 million so far this summer, already signing Daniel James for £15 million from Swansea City, a deal that could be worth up to £18 million with add ons and Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace for £45 million, a deal that could be worth £50 million with add ons. Speaking about transfers after United’s 1-0 victory over Inter Milan, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said:

“We have been linked with so many players. I’m sure you don’t believe every single player that we’ve been linked with, but I think that Manchester United sometimes have, because of the wealth, maybe we have had to pay more, a bigger premium to get players in, and that’s just the world we live in.

“And we’ve taken our time, we’re not going to overpay, but we have to get the right people in, the right players.”

United will need to get their summer plans into action soon though as the summer transfer window will close at 5 pm on Thursday 8 August 2019, leaving just over a fortnight to get business done. Maguire is a player who is hotly linked to the club at this moment in time, as is Sporting CP midfielder Bruno Fernandes, who seems to get a lot of media attention with nothing solid seemingly happening.

Solskjaer will be looking for his side to start the new Premier League season in style, aiming to silence the boo boys. If pre-season is anything to go by, with United beating Perth Glory 2-0, Leeds United 4-0 and Inter Milan 1-0, with the likes of Mason Greenwood, Marcus Rashford, Paul Pogba, Victor Lindelof, Wan-Bissaka and James all looking good so far, the opening match of the season, against Chelsea at Old Trafford, could be a good one.
