Manchester United have signed Daniel James from Swansea City, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first signing of what is to be expected a busy summer transfer window. The 21-year-old has been linked to the club for some time now and it was expected the signing was to be completed a number of weeks ago, however, the player’s father died suddenly. James signed a five year contract, with the option on a sixth year.
Rumours suggest that this is to be the first of four or five signings at the Old Trafford club this summer with Solskjaer looking to bring desire, determination and fight back into his squad which faltered in all of those things at the end of the 2018/19 season. It could also start the process for a number of players to leave the club this summer, which is also needed.
James, 21, is widely regarded as a player with many prospects and was called up to represent Wales at senior level in the summer international but withdrew from the squad after the death of his father. Ryan Giggs saw something in him which could carry Wales forward, which could also be the same thing to help United persevere. Speaking to the official Manchester United website of his transfer, James said:
“This is one of the best days of my life and a challenge I am really looking forward to. The Premier League is the best league in the world and Manchester United is the perfect place for me to continue to develop as a player.
“This is an incredibly proud moment for me and my family, however, it is tinged with sadness that my father isn’t able to share this experience with us. I am looking forward to working with Ole, meeting the team and getting started.”
Solskjaer will be looking to rebuild his United squad, starting this summer. There is a lot of speculation surrounding players who may leave the club this summer, also players linked with making a move to the Theatre of Dreams during the summer transfer window, which closes on the 8 August 2019, a day before the new Premier League season starts. Speaking of signing James of the official Manchester United website, Solskjaer said:
“Daniel is an exciting young winger with lots of skills, vision, exceptional pace and a good work ethic. He had a great season with Swansea City and has all the attributes needed to become a Manchester United player.
“We are delighted he has signed with our club and we are all looking forward to working with him. This is the perfect environment for Daniel to continue his development.”
United will now be able to continue their summer rebuilding plans with Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Bruno Fernandes hotly linked to the club with Solskjaer seeking to sign a right-back, maybe two midfielders, and a winger, perhaps a central defender and a forward, as some players may still leave the club. Most importantly though, I look forward to seeing James during the pre-season tour which should be a test of his abilities.
