Earlier today, we covered a story from the Daily Mirror in which it was claimed that Angel Gomes had rejected Manchester United’s last contract offer. It was also reported that Chelsea are ‘confident’ they’ll sign the Englishman on a free transfer.
After Ole Gunnar Solskjaer convinced Tahith Chong to put pen to paper and sign a new deal, it felt like a formality that Gomes would follow suit.
Instead, it seems as though he’s closer than ever to the exit door, with his contract expiring next month.
Following an electric pre-season tour, it felt like Gomes was slowly being integrated into the first-team squad. However, a handful of appearances later and we’re all feeling a little underwhelmed.
Gomes barely impressed on those displays but I’d have definitely liked to have seen him involved more often. The aforementioned Mirror article does state that the attacking-midfielder has turned down a £30,000-a-week deal, hinting he’s not really in it for the money, either.
I’m all for a player wanting to play. However, is Chelsea really the best option for Gomes given they’re notorious for stacking up youth talents and barely giving them a chance?
Surely he’s better off at Old Trafford than Stamford Bridge in that regard?
Anyway, as you can imagine, United fans aren’t happy at the prospect of the star 19-year-old leaving on a free transfer. We’ve compiled some tweets below:
