Mourinho content with Manchester United transfer business this summer

Jose Mourinho has suggested that he is content with his Manchester United transfer business this summer. The Portuguese manager has indicated that the club could still make one more signing but that he would not be ‘crying’ if they did not. During the summer, Mourinho had suggested positions which needed to be strengthened this summer; the defence, of which he signed Victor Lindelof, the defensive midfield area, with Nemanja Matic being signed, a striker to replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic, of which Romelu Lukaku was signed and an attacking midfielder to operate on the wing. Ivan Perisic was linked to United throughout the summer, but a deal has not been done and it looks like one never will.

Mourinho said he was content with the clubs efforts to strengthen his side and he is happy with the players he has, who have strengthened his squad somewhat. The Portuguese manager has stated that he will not protest if a fourth signing does not arrive at the Theatre of Dreams this summer. Speaking during his press conference ahead of the clubs opening Premier League clash against West Ham United at Old Trafford on Sunday, the manager, reported by Sky Sports, said:

“In my initial analysis from January and through the months I was thinking of four players but I’m not a difficult person to work with in spite of if you make it look different.

“I understand the reality of the market, the numbers and my club by doing 75 per cent of what I asked, the club did well.

“I don’t think I’m in a position of crying, moaning, protesting. I’m not in a position to say I’m not happy.

“I’m happy with the club’s efforts. If the remaining 25 per cent don’t arrive I will not moan, I will just go with everything I have to try to win every match I play.”

Mourinho suggested that he still remains hopeful of signing a wide player this summer. The club was suggested to have agreed personal terms with Paris Saint-Germain right-back Serge Aurier on Thursday, which seemed unbelievable as the player has legal issues to resolve surrounding a conviction for assaulting a Police Officer in France, which saw his work permit cancelled last year, keeping him out of a UEFA Champions League clash with Arsenal. United are also linked to Tottenham Hotspur left-back Danny Rose, who reportedly is not allowed to leave the Premier League runners-up this summer, neither player being the wide player the media seem to think Mourinho is looking for. Mourinho said:

“We got a central defender that can play in many other positions, which is important. We got a central midfielder, a striker, obviously, the 25 per cent would be for a player from the sides, but we have players.

“If we cannot strengthen the team in these areas we have players that we can trust.”

United have so far not ruled out any additions, so that should keep the media coming up with names of players they can link to the club, only for that player to either remain at his current club or go elsewhere, which will then give the media another story to write about how United missed out on the player. There seem to have been many of those situations this summer already and with just under three weeks of the transfer window remaining, there will probably be some more. United could do with a winger, not one which will see the likes of Anthony Martial leave the club on loan, that would be stupid, but one who could demonstrate what United need on the flanks this season to remain that penetrating force in the Premier League and beyond.
