Nemanja Matic is pleased to have made a good start to his Manchester United career and has now set his sights on staying at the club for a long time.
The Serbian international midfielder was awarded both the Sky Sports and Official Manchester United Man of the Match awards for his performance in the opening weekend win against West Ham at Old Trafford.
Talking to MUTV, Matic thanked his team-mates for welcoming him to the club, following his summer move from Premier League rivals Chelsea.
“Thanks to the guys, they have accepted me from my first day and I feel their support. Thanks to them, I feel very comfortable and I feel like I will be here a long time. They have helped me, and I am happy if I give them something back, and that I helped us to win.”
Matic was pleased with the style of play that helped Manchester United take all three points on Sunday against West Ham.
“We played good football, and I think our supporters enjoyed it as well. It’s good to start well with three points, the season is long but we have to collect a lot of points and we’ve had a good start.”
The first Serbian to play for Manchester United since Nemanja Vidic, Matic enjoyed the experience of playing at Old Trafford in a red shirt for the first time on Sunday.
“It was great [to play at Old Trafford], when you wear that [United] shirt you feel some kind of pressure because this is a big club, but that’s why we are here.”
Matic, signed for £40m from Chelsea, realises the importance of playing for a big club like Manchester United and is looking forward to working with his team-mates this season.
“We know that it’s a big responsibility to play for Manchester United and I’m happy that we have started well and that I hope we continue like this – I’m sure this group can do good things.”
Romelu Lukaku scored twice for the Reds in the opening day win against West Ham. Matic was pleased for his fellow home debutant. United’s number 31 was not only happy with Lukaku’s goals, but also with how the Belgian striker held up the ball to help the Reds retain possession.
“I am happy for him, not only that he scored goals, but his amazing all-round game as well. He saved a lot of balls and he gave us self-confidence up front.”
Matic was pleased that Lukaku scored the first two goals in the 4-0 win as a two-goal lead gave Manchester United’s other players more room to express themselves. While Matic is also confident that Lukaku, signed for £75m from Everton this summer, will continue his good form, after scoring three goals in his first two competitive appearances for Manchester United.
“It was very important for us that he scored his first two goals and, after that, it was easier for us to play, the game was more open, and there was more space to use. I’m happy for him and that we have him on the team, and I’m sure he will continue his form.”
Nemanja Matic is pleased to have made a positive start to his Manchester United career, playing 90 minutes in the UEFA Super Cup defeat to Real Madrid, in which he set up United’s only goal with a shot that Keylor Navas could not hold onto. Then, putting in a man of the match performance against West Ham on his Premier League debut for the Reds. Both the fans and the manager Jose Mourinho, who of course knows Matic well from his time at Chelsea, are impressed by the way the Serbian has started life at his new club.
